Adopting a new puppy or kitten to join the family is an exciting time! This furry and adorable new family member is helpless in the way they make everyone who meets them smile.
As enjoyable as this time is, there is a lot to take care of in terms of your new companion's healthcare during their first year of life.
Your veterinarian will establish a customized healthcare plan that meets all of your kitten or puppy's requirements during this stage of their life. Your vet will also give you lots of guidance and support during your journey with your new pet!
It's ideal for puppies to attend their first veterinary appointment when they are six weeks of age and kittens when they are approximately eight weeks.
At your initial visit, your furry friend will receive a full physical examination to assess their overall health, check for signs of any congenital defects, and look for external parasites.
Your vet will also administer deworming medications for roundworms and hookworms and the first round of kitten or puppy vaccinations.
Finally, your vet will perform a blood test on your kitten to check for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.
Puppies and kittens should see the vet 3 to 4 times between the ages of 6 and 16 weeks. These appointments give your veterinarian the opportunity to examine your pet's overall health and to administer all vaccinations on schedule.
